Course Description:  Discover the art of hand sewing in this fun and practical short course! You’ll start by mastering essential techniques—threading a needle, tying knots, and practicing a variety of hand stitches. As you build confidence, you’ll apply your new skills to create a personalized sewing project to showcase your craftsmanship. Throughout the course, you’ll not only develop technical sewing abilities but also practice patience, precision, and creativity. By the end, you’ll walk away with a finished project and the skills to tackle future hand-sewing adventures. Note: Students will be provided materials, but may go out and purchase their own if preferred.  

ACT PREP  

Course Length:  9 weeks  

Grade Level: Priority to 11th Grade in 2nd Quarter; 10th Grade in 4th Quarter

Course Description:  This quarter-long course will help prepare you for taking the ACT your Junior year. Using a program called Methodize, students will complete different lessons focusing on the core areas of the ACT – English, Mathematics, Reading and Science. This course will offer ACT practice tests that will help students get a better understanding of how the test works and get experienced with the types of questions asked on the ACT.   This course is set up as an asynchronous, pass-fail course. To pass the course, you need to complete all of the units within the MethodTestPrep program, as well as complete two different full-length ACT practice tests – one when you first start, and one after you complete the units.   

ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

Description:   Step back in time to learn about the civilizations of the ancient world in this asynchronous short course!  Not only will students learn about societies, technologies, and trade networks of realms such as the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire, they will build their historical thinking skills. Activities, videos, and readings will challenge students to analyze primary and secondary source documents and to compare/contrast empires. Additionally, these studies will teach students to determine connections and patterns that transcend time and space.

ANIMAL SCIENCE CERTIFICATION PREP COURSE (Short Course - Second Quarter)

Description:  Art meets science in this new hands-on course! Participants will learn to create accurate, detailed, and expressive representations of biological subjects, ranging from plants and animals to microscopic organisms. Emphasis will be placed on understanding anatomy, morphology, and scientific observation to ensure precision in every artwork. Students will use both sides of the brain to gain practical skills in both scientific accuracy and artistic expression. By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of illustrated works that reflect a strong grasp of both artistic and scientific principles with the potential to have their work published! This course is ideal for students with a passion for both art and biology, as well as those interested in pursuing careers in fields such as medical illustration, nature publishing, or scientific communication.

BLUEPRINT DRAWINGS

Course Length: Quarter Course

Course Description: This course introduces students to mechanical and architectural drawings with an emphasis on blueprint reading and interpretation. Students learn to define blueprints, plans, and specifications; understand how they are prepared; and identify the purpose, importance, and proper handling of a complete set of plans. Instruction includes identifying cover pages, title blocks, views, details, symbols, abbreviations, lines, scale, and the use of a fractional rule to calculate measurements. This course also requires a hands-on portion in which students create their own architectural blueprints for a “dream cabin,” applying proper drawing conventions and handling procedures. Required materials for this activity will be sent to students, and failure to complete the hands-on portion will result in not receiving the 0.25 credit.

CDL PREP

Course Length: Quarter Course

Prerequisite(s): None

Course Description: Instructs students in the basics of heavy equipment operation licensure requirements, followed by professional skill building and employment readiness. Note: This course does not provide behind-the-wheel instruction nor completion of the Commercial Drivers License exam. The exam must be scheduled to be taken at a local DMV.

CREATIVE WRITING

Course Length: 6 weeks

Prerequisite(s): None

Course Description: In this course, students will write original essays, prose, short stories/dramas, and descriptive non-fiction. Students will analyze works of literature to critique, evaluate, and refine their own creative writing skills. The reading, analyzing, and discussing of published works of fiction will be used as a springboard to original pieces of writing. In this course, we will focus on the craft of finding one’s voice through writing.
