Course Description:   Prepare yourself to do your civic duty! In this short course, students work asynchronously through several lessons to learn about the framework of the United States government. Games and activities in iCivics will also be used to teach students about the roles of different government officials and agencies. Building one's knowledge and skills is critical to creating an educated citizenry. The class culminates in taking the Civics test. Passing this assessment is required to graduate from high school in Wisconsin. This course will help get you prepared; you've got this!

GRAPHIC NOVEL EXPLORATIONS

Course Description:  In Graphic Novel Explorations, students will apply the three enduring outcomes within an English course to the specific genre of graphic novels: read with intent, write with purpose, and speak with clarity. This short course will provide a deeper analysis of the elements used within different types of graphic novels and the examination of a graphic novel’s structure. Asynchronous lesson content will contain examples of contemporary and classic graphic novels. Course is pass/fail as determined by three assessments aligned to the enduring outcomes.

HAND SEWING

Course Description:  Discover the art of hand sewing in this fun and practical short course! You’ll start by mastering essential techniques—threading a needle, tying knots, and practicing a variety of hand stitches. As you build confidence, you’ll apply your new skills to create a personalized sewing project to showcase your craftsmanship. Throughout the course, you’ll not only develop technical sewing abilities but also practice patience, precision, and creativity. By the end, you’ll walk away with a finished project and the skills to tackle future hand-sewing adventures. Note: Students will be provided materials, but may go out and purchase their own if preferred.  

NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY

Description:   This quarter-long course will give students the opportunity to investigate how a milk-gallon-sized amount of uranium could destroy a city, and we ask ourselves whether and how this energy might be used for good and whether it should be used at all. This course covers investigations of fission within a nuclear chain reaction, stable and unstable isotopes, and the role of the strong force within the nucleus in binding protons and neutrons together. The unit ends with how nuclear chain reactions are controlled in nuclear power plants and explores radiation associated with both enrichment of uranium and waste from nuclear reactors.

PODCASTING

Description:  In Podcasting, students will apply the three enduring outcomes within an English course to the specific platform of podcasting: read with intent, write with purpose, and speak with clarity. This short course will provide the foundation to learning about the “behind the scenes” when developing a podcast. The course will highlight elements and skills necessary for integrating successful podcasts. Asynchronous lesson content will contain examples of contemporary and popular podcasts. Course is pass/fail as determined by three assessments aligned to the enduring outcomes. Providing audio clips of one’s voice when answering these assessments is a requirement.

ROCKS & MINERALS

Course Length:  6 weeks

Prerequisite(s): None 

Description:    This quarter-long course will give students the opportunity to investigate the rock cycle and rock identification; what is a mineral and mineral identification; and weathering and erosion principals.  The unit ends with the opportunity to apply gained knowledge to a real-world investigation of The Sphinx in Giza, Egypt, and the Statue of Liberty in New York City.
