Prerequisite(s): Heavy Equipment Explorations (or Construction Explorations if taken before the 2026-2027 school year)

Course Description: Introduces students to heavy equipment used in the construction industry. Students will also be instructed on basic safety, maintenance, and communication methods that operating engineers may be exposed to.

Notes: Completion of this course, along with Basic Grade & Construction Math and Basic Equipment Maintenance, at a C or better makes the student eligible for a Pre-Apprenticeship Certification endorsed by Local 139–International Union of Operating Engineers. / Completion of this course at a B or better can earn apprenticeship credit at Fox Valley Technical College.

Course Description: In this course, students will pursue a greater understanding and appreciation for cultures of various races, ethnicities, socio-economic classes, and genders by analyzing modern and classic literature. Students will practice using textual references, inferring, and critical thinking. This course continues to focus on applying the three enduring outcomes of: strengthening the ability to read with intent, write with purpose, and speak with clarity.

Information Technology (IT) Explorations

Course Length: Semester Course

Prerequisite(s): None

Course Description: This course is designed as an exploration of the information technology career pathways. Students will get an introduction to information technology careers so that they can better assess which pathway to pursue. In this course students explore basic concepts in the broad areas of information technology, as well as career options in each area. Students study the concepts of networking information support, web and digital communications, and programming and software development.

Note: Dual credit can be earned for IT Career Exploration and IT Security Awareness through Madison College.

Course Description: In Language for Pathways, students will elevate their reading, writing and speaking skills they worked on in American Cultural Studies and/or Global Cultural Studies by focusing on the scientific and business side of the communication arts. Among other skills, students will practice annotation, attention to detail in their writing, and vocal communication. This course continues to focus on applying the three enduring outcomes of: strengthening the ability to read with intent, write with purpose, and speak with clarity. The outcomes allow for student choice, whether it be by method of showing the skills or by topic. This course is appropriate for students of all skill levels who enjoy open-ended, skill-based assessments.

Course Description: What is biotechnology and how is it changing the way we live? Is it possible nature can provide all of the answers to some of science’s most pressing concerns? In this course, you will learn the basics of biotechnology and evolutionary theory, explore the various ways we grow, store and preserve food, and discover the process of fermentation and microbiology. This course will also cover the importance of breeding plants, hybridization, and how early breeding programs led to the study of genetics and an understanding of the function of genes.

SKILLED TRADES EXPLORATIONS

Course Description: This semester-long course introduces students to the skilled trades through exploration of the construction industry, including how it operates and the roles of various trades and professions. Students engage in hands-on, skill-based activities while learning essential safety practices, applied math, communication, and blueprint reading. The course examines workforce demographics, wage and benefit potential, and the professional behaviors that contribute to success in construction careers. Students document their learning in a Career Exploration Portfolio and complete a student-choice, hands-on capstone project to make an informed decision about pursuing a career in the construction industry.
